Week 9 Zoom session topics: your input requested!
5/28/20
I am SO excited for our Week 9 daily live Zoom sessions (June 15-19). Thank you for filling out the initial survey and letting me know what topics you’re most interested in! Based on your votes and input, I’ve created a semi-finalized list of session topics, see below. Dates and times for each session are TBD. I’m aiming for 30-40 minutes per session. The sessions will be recorded, but I HIGHLY recommend that you join LIVE. I know seniors will have graduated by this point, but you are more than welcome to join us if you’d like to, especially if a particular session peaks your interest!
Session topics:
I will structure each session so we’re not just sitting on Zoom staring at each other; and the sessions will be guided & driven by YOUR questions! Some sessions will even have knowledgeable guest panelists ready to answer your questions – and I’ll simply be moderating.
When you have 5-10 minutes, please fill out this form and let me know what you specifically want to learn about and take away from each session topic! The form will close on Friday, June 5 so I have time to get the sessions ready in time for Week 9.
Missing work?
5/28/20
Missing an assignment or two (or seven, yikes) in the grade book from the remote Essential Learning period (April 20th onward)? Well, today is your lucky day because I'm giving you the opportunity to complete those assignments to earn up to 80% of the points! Read on...
Steps to complete any missing assignments:
Note #2: To clarify, you cannot earn a grade lower than what you had in Skyward at MT3, per OSPI and ISD guidelines. That being said, if you had an A at MT3 or you're happy with your MT3 grade, you're golden! No need to complete any missing work. However, let's say you had a B at MT3 and completing some missing work could get you to an A - absolutely reach out so we can get you to an A!!
Note #3: If you already have an A, this does not really apply to you. PLEASE DO NOT DO ANY MISSING ASSIGNMENTS. This creates more work for both you and me!

CareerConnect@Home Week 3: "Dreams into Dollars"!
5/17/20
May is Career Connected Learning Month and Career Connect Washington has been honoring this month with CareerConnect@Home! This month, they've been hosting 30-45 minute live discussion sessions on Youtube with WA-based organizations to allow students to explore various career paths.
This week, we enter the highly anticipated Week 3: “Dreams into Dollars” - Start-Ups, Small Businesses, & Entrepreneurship. Since this week's theme is so closely tied to our curriculum, we're going to participate as a class! Watching a discussion session this week is required and there is a corresponding graded assignment.
Here's how it will work:
May is Career Connected Learning Month!
5/5/20
Did you know that May is Career Connected Learning Month? (May is also National Bike Month, National Salsa Month, and National Moving Month, JSYK). Celebrate with Career Connect Washington's Career Connect @ Home!
Starting Monday, May 4th, every school day in May at 3:30pm, 30-45 minute live discussions will be held via livestream on the Career Connect @ Home YouTube channel (they'll also be saved to the YouTube channel for later viewing). Students can hear about Washington-based organizations & careers that might align with their interests and goals, and join industry leaders for a series of online discussions — with live Q & A through Instagram (@Career.Connect.at.Home). Examples of organizations you have the opportunity to hear from through Career Connect @ Home: Uber, Moz, Zillow, MOD Pizza, KUOW just to name a few.
Each week there is a different theme and different companies. Here’s the breakdown of each week’s theme:

We made it!
4/24/20
Happy Friday - we made it through Week One of remote Essential Learning! I hope you're getting accustomed to this unique style of learning; I know, it's hard for me too.
Personally, I know I have my own takeaways and 'learning moments' from this week. For example, note when the apartment complex maintenance crew is scheduled to use leaf blowers and lawn mowers right outside my 'recording studio.' And keep my cat entertained with treats while recording video lectures so she doesn't meow at random times throughout the recording.
My biggest takeaway from this week is sticking to time limits. This week was a trial run for us all! I understand that the combo of a video lecture + a follow-up assignment was potentially daunting for you. And, to be frank, it was for me too. Virtual learning is SO much different than seeing you all in the classroom.
Thus, moving forward, every week will typically look like this: 3-4 days of video lectures (or assigned reading), each followed by a short quiz or virtual exit slip to check for understanding. PS: I'm working on cutting down the length of my video lectures; it certainly takes practice. Then, there will be a summative assignment at the end of the chapter allowing you to demonstrate your learning of the content. One requirement I'm going to stick to is no late work accepted; all daily activities will be due by 11:59pm the same day they're assigned. We will continue to use Microsoft Teams for all IBBM SL Essential Learning.
My tips for you moving forward:
Office Hours
4/20/20
I will host daily Office Hours (M-F) to answer specific student questions regarding Essential Learning content and the 25 minute daily learning activities. Office Hours will always be hosted within my Office Hours Team. In this Team, there are separate channels for each Economics and IBBM SL chapter that we'll cover during the school closure, plus one for general questions about remote learning. If you have questions or need clarification about any Essential Learning content, you can post in the Posts tab of the appropriate chapter's channel at any time of the day and I will respond during my daily Office Hours. Below are my daily Office Hours; I changed them up each day so you can find a time that works for you!

Microsoft Teams: use of this platform required for my classes starting April 20
4/6/20
Once Essential Learning begins on April 20, the use of Microsoft Teams will be required for all SHS IBBM SL and Economics students. I've created a Microsoft Form (links below) so you can confirm whether or not you have access to your Team; please reply to this survey by Thursday, April 9.

Want to keep up on the news in a non mind-numbing way? My top two picks are below. I love these two because they’re geared toward younger generations, they’re contemporary, they try to add humor when appropriate, and they summarize news in a way that’s actually fun to read (with links provided to articles). Update re: new content
3/16/20
Posting an update because I have received a few questions about this: at this time, ISD has instructed teachers NOT to post or share any new content via email or their websites due to equity issues. This includes IB Exam preparation materials. I will email and post any new updates in a timely manner. Thank you for your patience!

It is with heavy hearts that we're passing along the announcement of the cancellation of ICDC 2020. ICDC qualifiers, we know that you've worked very hard and were excited to head to Nashville this spring, and we understand that this is extremely disappointing. We are so proud of everything you've accomplished this year in your DECA endeavors!

Latest DECA State update!
3/3/20
For those attending DECA State this week: please read the coronavirus response from Washington DECA as well as the new competition protocol related to preventing the spread of germs. We will address these two documents during the meeting this evening (taking place at 5:30pm in rooms 1412-1418).
ACTION ITEM: if you have prior obligations (e.g. sports tryouts) and you need to arrive late Thursday, leave & come back on Friday, and/or leave early on Saturday (or any other exception), please fill out this survey immediately. This information will be used by advisors and chaperones so we know where students are at all times!
Lastly, if you are no longer competing at state due to coronavirus or another reason, please email me ASAP with your full name and event(s) that you’re dropping out of. We will provide further information about potential refunds when we have that information from ISD. Please keep in mind the following rules regarding drops: If one of the competitors in a TDM (team decision making role play event) drops, the other partner can still attend State and compete but cannot advance to ICDC. If one of the competitors of a written event drops, the rest of the team can still compete but the competitor who dropped cannot advance to ICDC with the team if they qualify.
Washington DECA and Issaquah School District will continue to monitor local government agencies for updates and guidelines. If anything changes regarding the status of Skyline’s participation at this event due to a Washington DECA decision or an Issaquah School District decision, we will contact you promptly.

DECA Business Plan: first section turn-in
10/09/2019
I’ve decided to collect each section of your DECA Business Plan as they are due. The reasoning behind this is: a) I can track your progress on your paper and b) I can provide comments & suggestions as you go. Once the big DECA upload deadline comes around in early January, it will be far too late for me to provide feedback on your paper. That being said, please bring 1 printed copy per team of your first section (see below) to class on Friday, October 11th:
IB Exam Registration now open!
10/03/2019
Registration for IB exams is open from October 1st to 31st. More information about registration can be found here (click on the 'Student Information' tab, then choose the 'IB Exams' or 'IB Exam Registration' options for further info). There is also a Flex Time available for those who'd like more information about IB Exams on Tuesday, October 8 in the Theatre. You can sign up on FlexiSched. Let me know if you have any additional questions!
DECA Class Period Representatives - apply by Friday, 9/27
09/20/2019
This year we will be rolling out a new plan for communication within Skyline DECA. Each class will have one class representative who will be asked to 1) attend a monthly meeting with the DECA board and 2) act as a communication medium between the board and the rest of Skyline DECA students. We ask that interested students possess strong speaking abilities, punctuality, and passion for DECA. This will be an extremely important position that - if implemented well - will prove very advantageous to our chapter.
If you are an interested student, answer the three following questions by next Friday (9/27/19) and send responses as a Word Doc to haydenjmiller01@gmail.com:
*Include name, grade, and gender.
Flex Time offerings!
09/16/2019
I apologize that my upcoming Flex Times offerings were not available for sign-up today. However, they're up on FlexiSched now! I'm offering the same session (Business Plan idea generation & consultation) for both Tuesday, 9/24 and Wednesday, 9/25. If you feel like you need time to brainstorm Business Plan ideas with your partner(s) and/or you want to run an idea by me, this is the Flex Time for you! We will review the reasons for starting up a business, the problems that a new business may face, and the elements of a business plan to support your brainstorming session. Please only attend the 9/24 session OR the 9/25 session!! This will ensure that as many students as possible can utilize this time for Business Plan idea generation/consultation. Do not attend both.
DECA Dues
09/16/2019
Happy Monday! All of my students (IB Business Management SL & Economics) must pay the $40 DECA dues. You can pay dues online here or pay via check to the bookkeeper (check can be made out to Skyline High School; put "DECA dues" in the memo section). The deadline to do so is Monday, September 23 at 3:00pm.
More on the DECA Business Plan
09/12/2019
It sounds like a lot of you (IBBM SL students) have some great ideas for your DECA Business Plan - and I'm so excited! Many of you have asked to schedule time to meet with me to discuss your idea(s). If you'd like to run an idea by me, please organize your thoughts and generate some type of quick pitch that you can present to me before or after class. I'm also happy to chat with students about Business Plans for a few minutes before/after school, as needed. Please email me if you'd like to chat. hallj@issaquah.wednet.edu. Thanks!
Current Events!
09/10/2019
I'm excited to begin Current Events next week! As a reminder, 1-2 students will present a current event each week (Tuesday for periods 1, 3, & 5; Wednesdays for periods 4 & 6). The running list of assigned presentation dates can be found in the files & links section of Section 1.1 for your class, and the criteria/rubric can be found here.
For your current event, you can use any credible news source that you'd like, whether it be from your favorite news website, twitter, or a daily news briefing. Just make sure you save the article link and share with me before your presentation! For those of you who are interested (I mentioned this in class), there is a great daily e-newsletter called theSkimm that's delivered to your inbox every AM, giving you the news and info you need to start your day. It's a quick, easy, & entertaining way to know what's going on in the world -- and you can subscribe to it here.
IBBM SL - DECA Business Plan
09/10/2019
As I've mentioned in class, we will begin the DECA Business Plan process very soon. At this point, you should know who you're working with (or if you're working alone, that's great too). You should be in the process of brainstorming ideas. Think: what is a business problem that I could solve? How can you serve the needs & wants of individuals and/or groups? The possibilities are endless! Be creative. Then, the solution: Your Business Plan. Don't forget your unique value proposition! What makes your business different? What makes you stand out? Guidelines & sample events for each category can be found here.
As always, reach out if you have questions! I can't wait to see what brilliant ideas you come up with.
Miss Hall
We Made It!
09/06/2019
We made it through the first week of school - YAY! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting each of you this week. Thank you for your patience as I learn your names. My goal is to learn them all by next Friday. Hold me to it!
Amazing job to everyone who presented their Personal Brand posters today. You all seriously blew me away. I'm going to have to take things up a notch :) Keep up the good work!
I've had more questions about the DECA Business Plan. If you have a question over the weekend, be sure to write it down and ask on Monday. Since the Business Plan is completely new to all of you, it probably doesn't make much sense yet... but trust me, it will soon.
Don't forget: look over the syllabus with a parent/guardian this weekend and bring your signed form in on Monday. Also, please try to complete the Student Engagement Survey by Monday as well. Have a great weekend!
Happy Friday,
Miss Hall
Happy almost-Friday!
09/05/2019
A friendly reminder that your Personal Brand Projects are due TOMORROW (Friday, September 6) by the start of class. You will all present for about a minute each. I look forward to seeing your posters and displaying them in my classroom!
Parents & guardians - your student will bring home a form to sign stating that you both read through the syllabus and understand my expectations and policies. That form is due Monday, September 9. Please head to tab that corresponds with your student's course. You can find the syllabus on the course's home page.
Thank you!
- College major & future career exploration
- Resume workshop
- Interview advice, tips, & tricks
- Event management 101
- Post-secondary life: budgeting, internships, & general lifestyle management
- Social media management
- Check Skyward and make a list of all the assignments that you earned a 0 for (after April 20th).
- Email me with the assignments that you'd like to complete for up to 80% of the points. I will then email you with the assignment instructions (because you can't access past assignments in Teams).
- Complete the assignment(s) and email to me no later than Friday, June 12. Please keep in mind, I may not enter the points immediately upon receiving your assignment(s), so be patient!

- Choose one of the five discussion sessions to view next week (see below). The live discussion sessions take place at 3:30pm every week day on the Career Connect @ Home Youtube channel, and they also save them for later viewing if you're unable to join at 3:30pm. I highly encourage you to join live if you can, though!
- After viewing your chosen discussion session (whether live or not), answer follow-up questions via a virtual exit slip in Microsoft Teams. It'll be located in the Assignments tab of the General channel and will be titled 5/22 Career Connect @ Home exit slip. The assignment will be worth 20 points and you must complete it by Friday, May 22 at 11:59pm.
- Bonus opportunity #1: you can earn 2 bonus points on your 5/22 Career Connect @ Home exit slip assignment if you ask a question that you have for one of the organizations featured this week (PS: they'll answer it during the Q&A portion of their scheduled live discussion session)! How to do this: before your chosen organization's live session begins at 3:30pm (see below for dates & organizations), email careerconnectathome@gmail.com with your question for the business and CC me. Be sure to say you're a DECA student from Skyline High School's IB Business Management SL class! PS: It's really important to CC me so I know you sent it and can give you the extra credit.
- Bonus opportunity #2: you can earn up to 10 points of extra credit for watching a second discussion session and filling out another exit slip. Microsoft Teams won't let you fill out the form twice, so you will be able to complete a second form online (link to come on Monday). In your second form, just let me know where you want the points applied in Skyward (must be an assignment completed between 4/20-5/21, not before the school closure).
- Monday, May 18: Armoire is revolutionizing the traditional closet and changing the way the world consumes clothing. Armoire gives women access to a closet of their dreams – one that is tailored to their fit & style and provides an endless collection of high-end fashion to look and feel great in. Join their team as they share what it means to have a career in Product and User Experience.
- Tuesday, May 19: Madrona Venture Group will be sharing the innovative work they are doing as they help technology entrepreneurs launch and grow world-class companies.
- Wednesday, May 20: Join MOD Pizza, the locally growing super fast pizza company, as they share the Big Problem they are solving at the moment.
- Thursday, May 21: Here at Moz it’s about more than just great benefits. It’s a way of life built on our core values and we would like to share that with you.
- Friday, May 22: Join Chef Edouardo Jordan, James Beard Award-winning chef and restaurateur, owner of Junebaby and Salare as he shares his career path to becoming an award winning chef and entrepreneur.
May is Career Connected Learning Month!
5/5/20
Did you know that May is Career Connected Learning Month? (May is also National Bike Month, National Salsa Month, and National Moving Month, JSYK). Celebrate with Career Connect Washington's Career Connect @ Home!

We made it!
- Designate 25 minutes a day of uninterrupted time to IBBM SL. That way, you can focus, be efficient, and get your work done faster.
- Read and follow all instructions. Each assignment has detailed instructions and requirements. Be sure to follow them to earn full points!
- Take as much or as little of notes as you'd like/feel comfortable with. As always, you don't need to write down every single word on the slide. Take notes on key definitions, use bullet points, and/or jot down one key takeaway from each slide.
- Questions about content/material? Attend my virtual Office Hours in Microsoft Teams and post your questions! Or, dust off your trusty IBBM SL textbook and do some follow-up reading.
- Monday: 1:00-1:30pm
- Tuesday: 9:30-10:00am
- Wednesday: 12:00-12:30pm
- Thursday: 10:30-11:00am
- Friday: 11:00-11:30am

Microsoft Teams: use of this platform required for my classes starting April 20
4/6/20
Once Essential Learning begins on April 20, the use of Microsoft Teams will be required for all SHS IBBM SL and Economics students. I've created a Microsoft Form (links below) so you can confirm whether or not you have access to your Team; please reply to this survey by Thursday, April 9.

Latest IBBM SL Update
3/27/20
The situation at hand is obviously very dynamic, and updates have been made to the IBBM SL 5-week plan:
- I created a new page on my website under the IBBM SL tab called "School Closure Enrichment." Here is where you can find information about all learning activities & opportunities by week. I will continue to post these, so be sure to check this page daily! If you have any suggestions of what activities/opportunities you'd like to see here, please submit your ideas via the form at the bottom of the School Closure Enrichment page.
- Note: I've migrated our Community Forum page to Microsoft Teams. Each IBBM SL class period has its own Team; you should've received an invitation to join via email. I will post your weekly learning activities & opportunities on each Team page! Once you've accessed & entered Microsoft Teams, on the left, you'll see various "channels". General updates about this class will be posted in the "General" channel, then activities, discussions, and videos have their own channels. If you need access to your Team, follow your class period's link below, or email me for an invitation. Please use this fun new resource to stay engaged and participate in these activities!
- Another reminder to please submit your IA in a timely manner. I expect high quality work, so be sure to utilize the resources on my website! If you need support, please reach out.
- I've extended the deadline for late work to Friday, April 3. If you have any missing assignments on Skyward, please complete them and send to me by the deadline. The maximum score you can receive for late work at this point is 80%. After Friday, April 3, these missing assignments will become 0's in the gradebook.

IA's
3/13/20
When ready, you can submit your IA via Turnitin.
Enrollment Key: 1402
Class ID: 24219706
Before submitting your final IA, I highly recommend that you review each of the following resources on my website:
- Analysis Tools - use these various quantitative & qualitative SL tools/techniques/theories from our curriculum when analyzing your findings. If there's something from class/our textbook that you want to use that is not on this list, please email me for approval before moving forward. Most importantly, make sure your chosen tools/techniques/theories are relevant to your IA title!
- Structure Requirements & Recommendations - questions about the structure of your IA? This document includes IB requirements and my recommendations for formatting and structure.
- Citations & References - use this information to correctly & consistently cite and reference your various sources. This document also includes a sample bibliography!
- Peer Review Exercise - if you haven't already, I recommend you use the peer review activity to review your own paper before submission!
- IA Samples - use these past Skyline IA's to ensure you correctly highlight & label your Source Documents in the Appendices!
- Assessment Criterion - these are the 7 rubrics you'll be scored on (for a total score out of 25)
I know things are probably confusing/chaotic/disappointing right now - and I'm here to help! I'll be checking my email during normal school hours next week, 8am-3pm, to answer any IA questions.
Happy writing! I look forward to reading 118 awesome IA's.

Final Details re: DECA Area Competition
1/8/20
Final Information about Area is below. PLEASE READ ALL.
- Arrivals: Please arrive at the Skyline HS Commons by 6:30am. We will load the buses promptly; you'll be assigned a bus based on the first letter of your last name. Chaperones will be taking attendance on each bus on the ride to Meydenbauer.
- When we get to Meydenbauer: Once we arrive at Area, we'll get situated and then enter the opening ceremony. Once the ceremony is over, you'll need to check in with the chaperones at Meydenbauer by 10:00AM to re-confirm your presence at Area.
- Going to Bellevue Square: All students are allowed to go to Bellevue Square/Lincoln Square during the day, once the opening ceremony is over. If you want to do so, you'll need to check out of Meydenbauer Center with the chaperones and check in to the Starbucks at Bellevue Square, where chaperones will be stationed. When you leave Bellevue Square, you'll need to check back out of Starbucks then check back into Meydenbauer once you arrive. You can come and go as you please, as long as you follow the check in/check out policy and do not miss your event(s). You are also welcome to hang out at Meydenbauer all day.
- Event Time Slots: Be sure to note your time slot(s) for your event(s). These can be found on the Time Matrix attachment.
- These time slots are guidelines only. You should be prepared to arrive at your event 15 minutes early and be ready to go immediately or later than expected. It’s common that some events run ahead of time, some events are on time, and some events may be up to an hour behind.
- If you are in more than one event, it’s possible that you’ll encounter a timing conflict. Your role play take precedence. You’ll likely need to check in with event managers (teachers) for both your role play and pre-prepared to determine when to arrive.
- Make sure you are assertive and manage your own schedule!
- Attire: Make sure you’ve prepared your outfit. See the attached slide deck for suggestions on what to wear. Don't forget to iron/steam your clothes and shine your shoes if needed!
- What to Bring: Try and minimize your belongings as much as possible; only bring the materials you truly need! Less is more. Avoid bringing valuables; there will be many people going in and out of Meydenbauer. If you do bring any valuables such as a laptop, make sure you have a friend who can watch it while you’re competing (if you’re not using it in presentation). Also, we will not provide lunch, so bring your own lunch or bring money to purchase lunch at Bellevue Square!
- For those of you doing Role Plays: Don't forget to study your performance indicators, which can be found on my classroom website under resources to prepare. Also be sure to utilize the suggested role play presentation format, which can also be found on my website under resources. For individual role play participants, remember: you're completing TWO role plays (each worth 100 points); for each role play, you get 10 minutes to prep and 10 minutes to present. For team role play participants, remember: you're just completing ONE role play (worth 200 points total); you get 30 minutes to prep and 15 minutes to present. For all, your presentation time includes the judge's questions. Also remember, you cannot bring any materials into the role play. The scenario given to you during your role play(s) will list the accompanying performance indicators.
- For those of you doing Pre-Prepared's: Don't forget to bring the following items -- a laptop to present your slide deck on, any other visuals you plan to utilize if applicable (such as a poster), presentation notecards if you need them, and any handouts you plan to leave with the judge (again, I recommend creating a "placemat" but no food/drinks/money can be left with the judge). You will not be provided with internet access or a power outlet, so be sure your presentation is saved to your computer/a USB drive and your laptop is fully charged. Also keep in mind, your presentation time includes the judge's questions. Lastly, be sure to check my resources on my website one last time.
- End of day: We'll depart Meydenbauer sometime around 2:45pm and will arrive back to Skyline by 4:00pm. If you need to leave early, you should have already let me know via the Microsoft Form where you entered your contact info. If you have not let us know that you need to leave early, you need to do so immediately.

- Independent Business Plan: Problem
- International Business Plan: Analysis of International Business Situation (your Problem section should be “in progress” at this point)
- Franchise: Business history, background, & objectives (your Business Environment section should be “in progress” at this point)
- Grow Your Business: Introduction
- Why should we select you for the position of class representative?
- Describe yourself in three words.
- What does character mean to you?

Thank you!
Welcome!

Hello!
A little bit about me: I grew up in Lake Tapps, Washington, a small suburb about 45 minutes south of Seattle. Growing up, I was highly involved in club soccer, high school tennis, DECA, and student government. My love for business education - particularly marketing - grew in high school when I took business education classes, participated in DECA, and worked in the student store. I recently graduated from the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business with a degree in Business Administration and a focus in marketing. After college, I worked for UW Athletics in marketing & game day experience, creating exciting marketing initiatives and in-game elements for various Husky sports. I also worked at Eiger Marketing Group as an Account Executive where I developed engaging consumer activation footprints, events, & hospitality programs for Fortune 500 clients. In my free time, I enjoy fitness of all kinds, reading mystery novels, cheering on Husky Football, & exploring the PNW.
